Overland narrative.

From memory, J. F. Daugherty writes about his trip crossing the Plains by the northern route from Keokuk, Iowa to Virginia City, Montana Territory, where he spent the winters of 1864 and 1865. He met Indians and became a member of the Vigilante Committee for the protection of the city. He describes life in the Montana gold fields and methods of mining. He met Brigham Young and his wife, Harriet Amelia Folsom Young. On his return trip, he gives a vivid description of the geography of the country.
